Ricky Gervais Was Right, Celebrities Don’t Understand The Real World

Ricky Gervais’ opening monologue at the Golden Globes has been a hot topic this week, most notably because it let most of us know the Golden Globes was still a thing.

The host shocked those in attendance when he said things a lot of viewers at home were thinking.

“So, if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech, right?” the actor and comedian said. “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”

“If you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your God, and f— off,” he added before moving on to the first presenters who would go on to talk about climate change…

They weren’t alone. A lot of the people receiving awards spent time talking about climate change, blaming the bushfires in Australia on man’s inability to act. It’s worth noting that over two dozen people were arrested for arson in connection to those fires.

Gervais pointed out how these people, the Hollywood elite, like to lecture the rest of the public on things that need to change, while simultaneously taking paychecks from companies that don’t live up to their supposed “beliefs”.

“If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agents,” he said. There’s a lot of truth to that. These people cry about left-wing causes like a government enforced “livable wage”, and “tolerance”, but at the same time they work with companies like Amazon, and Apple, and others that literally have sweatshops, or work with manufacturers that have sweatshops.

Instead of heeding Gervais’ words, celebrities went ahead and used their platform to virtue signal. Michelle Williams praised the right to kill babies in the womb. Kate McKinnon spent her entire introduction for Ellen talking about how they are both lesbians. Perhaps the most blatant indication of celebrities not understanding the “real world” was this tweet by fashion designer Stella McCartney, who made Joaquin Phoenix’s suit:

I get it. Saving the planet is great, and I’m sure Mr. Phoenix gives a lot of money to causes he believes are helping the planet, but come on… Praising a guy for ONLY wearing one custom suit is pretty “out of touch” when trying to fight the perception that you just “don’t understand” how normal people live.

I’ll give Joaquin credit. He did request for his celebrity pals to limit their private jet travels, but that’s not exactly a problem the rest of us have to deal with… yet…
