Mitch McConnell Unloads On Democrats Over Impeachment, “The Country Deserves Better”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell came out firing at Democrats in a speech delivered on the House floor on Tuesday.

“The Senate Democratic leader recently said that as long as he can try to use the trial process to hurt some Republicans re-election chances quote ‘it’s a win-win’,” McConnell said, referring to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. “That’s what this is all about.”

McConnell was referring to an interview Chuck Schumer did in which the Senator plainly stated that this whole thing is about picking up seats in the House and Senate.

“There are people vulnerable politically. There are people who have a conscience,” he said in an interview. “There are people who are retiring. There are people who might have some beef. Who knows? I will tell you this: I talk to Republicans all the time, and they’re upset by this president.”

In the end, Mr. Schumer knows there is almost no chance the Republican-led Senate will convict Mr. Trump for pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political rivals, a move that would take two-thirds of senators, or 67. But the focus on what constitutes a fair trial, he argued, will either succeed in unearthing new information about Mr. Trump, or at least help Democrats pick up seats in 2020.

“It’s a win-win,” he said, describing his strategy, though he quickly corrected himself, settling on “no lose” as a better frame. If Republicans block new evidence, Democrats will deem the trial “illegitimate and a sham,” he said, adding, “Pursuing witnesses and documents makes us better off, no matter the outcome.”

“The Democratic leader just laid it right out there in case anybody had any doubt,” McConnell continued. “What a revealing admission.”

“Forget about the fate of the presidency, forget about the Constitution, as long as the process helps the Democrats’ political fortunes, our Democratic colleagues call it a win-win.”

Senator McConnell then posed the question “do these sound like leaders who really believe we are in a Constitutional crisis?”

McConnell later tweeted the video above along with the following caption:

“It’s clear Democrats see impeachment as one big political game. Sen. Schumer told reporters that as long as the process hurts Republicans, “it’s a win-win.” The country deserves better. We’re overdue for some seriousness and sober judgment. That is what the Senate will bring.”
