House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to delay sending articles of impeachment over to the Senate, and now Democrats are the ones calling for her to hurry it up.
“The longer it goes on the less urgent it becomes,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). “So if it’s serious and urgent, send them over. If it isn’t, don’t send it over.”
President Trump was impeached by the House on December 18, 2019. Since then, Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats have sat on the articles of impeachment. These same Democrats said that they couldn’t use the courts to enforce subpoenas because they didn’t have enough time.
Adam Schiff gave a press conference to use time as an excuse as to why Democrats felt they had to proceed with this rush-job impeachment sham. “We are not willing to allow the White House to engage us in a lengthy game of rope-a-dope in the courts,” he said all the way back in October. A month before that he told PBS News Hour “we feel a sense of urgency here.”
Now that sense of “urgency” has mysteriously disappeared, and Senate Democrats want to move on to save face.
Politico reports Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Wednesday morning that Democrats “should move on” and turn the articles to the Senate and Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) said he’s “ready” for the trial to start.
“I respect the fact that she is concerned about the fact about whether or not there will be a fair trial. But I do think it is time to get on with it,” said Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.).
“We were ready on the day the articles were voted, to conduct the trial,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.). “At some point it’s appropriate to send them and in effect pass the baton to senators who are going to continue to insist on witnesses and documents.”
While Senate Democrats wouldn’t call out Pelosi directly, it’s been made apparent they wish to move on from this and get back to work. At the very least, they understand how unpopular impeachment has become, and hope to distance themselves leading up to the 2020 election.
Furthermore, if the process is delayed any longer, Senate Democrats running for president will be forced to sit in an impeachment trial instead of being out on the campaign trail.
Senator Mitch McConnell already has the votes to approve the rules for the trial, opting to use the rules that were passed unanimously for Bill Clinton, however House Democrats do not find that to be acceptable this time around. Speaking on the House floor, McConnell said he’s “glad Democratic Senators are losing patience with this.”
We all have.
