Democratic House Chairman Tells Pelosi Time’s Up, “It’s Time To Send The Impeachment Articles To The Senate”

Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) joins a growing list of Democrats calling for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to deliver articles of impeachment to the Senate.

Speaking to CNN, the House Armed Services Committee Chairman said he gets what Pelosi is trying to do, but it’s time to move on.

“I understand what the speaker is trying to do,” he told CNN. “Basically, trying to use the leverage to work with Democratic and Republican senators to get a reasonable trial. A trial that will actually show evidence, bring out witnesses.”

“At the end of the day, just like we control it in the House, [Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell [R-Ky.] controls it in the Senate,” he continued. “I think it is time to send the impeachment articles to the Senate, and let Mitch McConnell be responsible for the fairness of the trial. He ultimately is.”

Pelosi has withheld the articles of impeachment since December 18. Democrats rushed to impeach the president in a completely partisan vote because they said the matter was “urgent”.

Now, Democrats like Pelosi and Schiff are demanding the Senate allow for new witnesses to testify in the Senate trial. One thing the media seems to never mention is the fact that Democrats in the House could have gone to the courts to enforce their subpoenas, but they once again used the “urgency” claim.

Now, feeling like they have some sort of power, Democrats think they can get Mitch McConnell to bow to their whims. Fortunately for Republican voters, McConnell has assured the American people that this will be a quick trial that will ultimately lead to President Trump’s acquittal.

“I’ve made clear from the beginning that no such leverage exists. It’s nonexistent, and yesterday we made clear it will never exist. … There will be no haggling with the House over Senate procedure,” McConnell said from the Senate floor.

Smith is one of many Democrats who have called for Pelosi to send the articles over. Yesterday, numerous Senators, including Diane Feinstein, said that the claims of “urgency” are pointless if the articles remain on Pelosi’s desk.

President Trump tweeted early on Thursday morning, calling out Pelosi for not sending over the articles to McConnell.

“Pelosi doesn’t want to hand over The Articles of Impeachment, which were fraudulently produced by corrupt politicians like Shifty Schiff in the first place, because after all of these years of investigations and persecution, they show no crimes and are a joke and a scam!”
